MIKE ABIUSO

Multi-instrumentalist producer and composer Michael Abiuso owns Behind the Curtains Media which he launched in 2012 in the back of a dirty tour van. The company has since landed a home in Park Slope, Brooklyn and has expanded in both size and services to become one of the leading music promotion and audio production firms in the greater NYC area.

Built on a solid foundation of endless industry professional relationships spawned from honesty and hard work, the company’s growth put Hanna Yando as the PR Manager allowing Michael to focus his attention to providing unique audio services for both musicians and companies of all sizes.

For select solo artists and bands, these services may include producing, songwriting, performing, coaching or maybe just telling a couple of jokes. For businesses, those services may including sound design, foley, scoring to picture (commercial, film, video game), podcasting or just editing. All services are packaged with mixing, mastering and topped off with a big smile. His recording techniques are a hybrid blend that utilize the  warmth of analogue gear for tracking and mixing while taking advantage of the speed and versatility of the modern digital world.

Michael has a degree in music education and can perform and record a wide variety of instruments. This sets his productions and scoring apart from some nerd in his basement with a cool sample library. He studied classical and jazz guitar,  music theory, composition/arranging and audio engineering. He has toured for 10+ years between his bands Kiss Kiss (guitar/vocals) on Eyeball RecordsThe Gay Blades (keyboards/vocals) on Triple Crown Records and The Venetia Fair (guitar/bass/vocals) on Red Blue Records

TESTIMONIALS

Mike is one of the most creative people I know. He is in many ways a mad scientist from a musical and engineering standpoint, but his compositions and productions are always grounded in a commercially competitive reality. Mike is constantly seeking out the best tools, creative processes, and sonic influences in order to keep a finger on the pulse of what will work across an incredibly wide array of projects. I've had the pleasure of collaborating with Mike in many capacities over the last decade and can say with confidence that he is a person you want on your team if you're looking to make compelling artistic statements in a highly personalized and unique way.

The Square Studio (Ice Nine Kills, Motionless in White)
Absolutely fantastic experience recording here. First off, the studio itself has a very warm and inspirational vibe to it, which is incredibly important for any musician. Mike (the owner and producer) truly goes above and beyond for the song. It never once felt like he was just doing “his job”, but rather it felt like a collaboration in trying to make the song as great as possible. He’s an incredibly arranger as well and is full of creative ideas. As a singer I usually don’t feel comfortable singing for the first time in front of a producer I just met, but with Mike I felt like I was at home. Great guy. Great place. Great sounding records

The results speak for themselves. The entire BTCM team is dedicated to getting you as visible as possible in the markets that matter to you and your music the most. They are as personable as they are hardworking too. They intimately and adeptly understand that we’re people and not just producing a product.

Mike is the best. Great people with great ears, great room, great gear. An affordable spot like their studio in Brooklyn is hard to come by. Plus, they are so deep in the creative process/close to the record that hiring them after making the record can be a no-brainer

Michael is such an incredible musician and producer. He works so efficiently and quickly and everything we do always turns out better than I could have imagined. It’s such a great environment, I couldn’t recommend enough!

From the moment we met Mike, there was an immediate connection with us both personally and with our project. We were initially impressed with his patience and thoughtfulness as he processed, assessed, and gave his honest opinion about our demos. Mike applied his extensive knowledge and expertise to help us create a sound that completely matched our vision . The final product was more than we ever dreamed of. Returning to his studio for a second time was a no-brainer. He went above and beyond to help us create our sophomore EP - during a pandemic no less! This time, we enlisted him to produce and add input from the songwriting stage. After helping us navigate remote sessions and following his expert guidance, he delivered far more than we expected. He was personally invested, and he and his team helped with EVERYTHING we needed - from the start, to the final release. We cannot recommend Mike and Behind the Curtains Media enough. He made the process fun, exciting, and you can tell he loves every single aspect of his job. He is not only an expert, but a friend, and an extremely special person overall. (and his studio is badass!)

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and working with Mike Abiuso for the past three years. He helped introduce me to the music industry and get my bearings straight! Working with him is so easy and laid back, because I trust him completely. Mike’s knowledge of music and music production/engineering are masterful and beautifully artistic. He puts his entire self into his projects because he truly cares about the client and wants them to walk away with a piece of art that they’re not only happy with, but also with something that resonates with their original intention. Especially the studio Mike has built, it’s the best environment to create and collaborate. I full heartedly recommend his services!

I <3 the BTCM team – Mike is game for anything, knows his stuff, and has a positive attitude that is key for long days in the studio. Good vibes all around!

After ‘trying out’ different studios to possibly work with, we knew that working with Mike Abiuso at Behind the Curtains Media was our new home for music making. He provides amazing personal attention to every project and listens to the artist in order to provide customized feedback and results. His ability to make suggestions in instrumentation and production are so fast, so on point, and so stress free. We highly recommend this studio

Behind The Curtains provides a unique and exceptional one-stop shopping experience for artists of all types. Mike and Hanna care deeply about their work and go the extra mile to provide their clients with high-quality services with a personal touch. Their office is as welcoming and cozy as a friend’s living room, and both the recording and publicity operations are run with great care and efficiency. As a musician recording there, I always felt Mike delivered everything I needed to make my job easier, including quality gear, a perfect headphone mix and a relaxed, but professional vibe. Their publicity shop is run the same the way. They pride themselves on developing a customized plan of attack for each artist and don’t just run every band through the same spreadsheet. Having worked in many studios over the years, I am confident in recommending these guys to anybody. They always get the job done right.
